After leaving the surf sheds, Brighton Street was followed for a distance, then up the right-of-way on to the hill past the trig station. The road along the ridge was followed for a mile, then the steep descent into the gully brought the runners on to Houghton Bay Road and thence to View Road, the zig-zag off this bringing them on to Queen's Drive. On reaching Lyall Bay beach, the runners were splil into two “rugby” teams — the "Spi'ingbiieks” and "Hawkland,” Foster mid Stevens being the respective captains.
