Rangitikei Hunt Club Steeplechase PAKANUI’S SPRINT Big Totalisator Increase at Marton Dominion Special Service. Marton, July 24. The Rangitikei Hunt Club made. a great success of its annual race meeting, held at Marton this afternoon. The day was fine, and the course in good order for the time of the year. There was a large attendance, and from the outset the indication was that the betting would be much heavier than that at last year’s fixture. During the day £9193/10/- was put through the totalisator, against £3040/10/- last year. The racing was good, and the Kangitikei Hunt Cup Steeplechase was won by Sleepy, who was ridden by his trainer. H. Dulieu. Middle won the Bracelet, and the principal flat race fell to Pakanui. The Governor-General attended and presented the trophies. During the day several good dividends were paid, the best being Lady Hoariri’s in the Glenmore Maiden Race. A Big Dividend. The field for the Glenmore Maiden numbered 19, and- the best backed were Final and Conversion. Lady Hoariri, Final and Glynne Park began well and nearing the straight these three and Conversion. Brilliant Acre and Ruenzori were the. leaders. Getting a nice run on the rails, Final drew up to Lady Hoariri and the two came away. Lady Hoariri held a narrow advantage all the way to the post and won by a head. Ruenzori and Brilliant Acre, who filled the minor places, were fairly well back. , Conversion’s chance may have neon slightly prejudiced through his drawing No. 17 at the barrier. Final began well from No. 2 and had a nice run all the way. .... ™ Tho Hurdlers. Donegal, the favourite for the Rosebank Hurdles, never occupied a winning position, and in the end was beaten into fourth place. Trackman and Glenthawn made the running with Master Norval and Widden handv. In the last half-mile Unexpected moved up quickly. He entered the straight well clear of the others, and, though Trackman came again, he won by a neck. Under pressure Master Norval finished on to beat Donegal for third place. Widden, Sea-kale and Bazaine were next. Unexpected won well, but Trackman was not disgraced and was doing well at the right end. Donegal was disappointing. He was a long way back in the early part of the race. Cyclopean fell. Favourite Scores. Old Surrey touched a short price in the Closeburn Hack Flying and justified it. Dawning Light hurried to. the . front, and Aube, Old Surrey and Warehi were prominent. Old Surrey took charge entering the straight and won nicely by a length from Dawning Light, who paid a good dividend. Huntwig Queen was a fair third, and G'lamjirtt was fourth. Quadroon ran very baflliy. Sleepy Too Good. Miss Pango and Sleepy were the favourites for the Rangitikei Hunt Cup Steeplechase and they paid the dividends. These two were much too good for the rest of the field and their prospects looked bright throughout the race. Miss Tango’s jumping was not all that could be desired, and failure in that department cost her her chance. Sleepy shaped well throughout and toward the end of the contest began to assert himself. He had Miss Pango well beaten at the end and passed the post with half a dozen lengths to spare. Evermore, an Autumn gelding carrying Mr. K. McK. Duncan’s colours, beat the others, but was an indifferent third. The winner is a promising sort. He is by Chaminade, and won at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting. Pakanui Scores. The Wellington failures of Pakanui did not deter backers from according the Hunting Song gelding strong support for the Riddiford Handicap. Airing went to the front and led from Fulojoy. Pakanui was next, then Brazen King and Taillight. Airing still had charge entering the straight, but Pakanui and Taillight challenged, and Pakanui got.up at the death to win by a head from Airing. Taillight ran a good race in third place, a couple of lengths away, and was running on solidly. The race was not far enough for Brazen King and Fulojoy failed to stay. For Gentlemen Riders. Gentlemen riders were in the saddles in the Otairi Ladies’ Bracelet, which was won by Middle from the favourite, Hirangi, with All Spirit at the head of the others. Middle, who was ridden by Mr. N. Davidson, paid a good dividend. He had only a neck to spare from Hirangi, who was ridden by his owner, Mr. K. McK. Duncan. Decisive Victory. The favourites, Joviality, Winsome Lu and Even Money filled the places in the Springrove Farewell Handicap, but the best backed of them, Joviality, was soundlyAeaten by Winsome Lu. As usual, Joviality demonstrated the possession of ample sliced, but he does not stay well and that has been the cause of several recent failures. Winsome Lu ran a really good race, and proved more solid that many expected, winning handsomely. Even Money, who filled third place, was less than a length behind Joviality and was going fairly well in the straight. The field was not a strong one.
