NOT TRUE TO LABEL

Loir-priced Garments Sold as “All-Wool” Goods A warning that any low-priced woollen goods offered to the public should be carefully examined to see whether they were true to the description given them by the seller was issued on Saturday by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. D. G. Sullivan. “My attention has been drawn to certain goods advertised .as 'all wool’ which, on examination, have been found to contain a very small percentage of wool,” said Mr. Sullivan. “The prices at which these garments are offered are ridiculously low, and this under ordinary circumstances would be sufficient warning to the purchaser that tile garments yould not possibly be ‘all wool.’ “However, in the public interest, I consider it advisable to issue a warning that any woollen goods offered at absurdly low prices should be carefully examined to see whether they are true to the description given them by the seller. I consider that in fairness to local woollen manufacturers, I am justified in issuing tins warning, as they have established a reputation for-high-class woollqu goods, and are unable to compete with garments which contain only a small proportion of woollen yarn. In one case brought under my notice, it was found on examination that the garment offered for sale and described as ‘all wool’ contained less than 5 per cent. wool. "The Sale of Goods Act presumes that the purchaser will exercise judgment in the purchase of goods and the rule caveat emptor (lot the buyer beware) is considered an adequate safeguard. If, however, the goods offered for sale are other than those represented. the buyer lias right of action for refund of his purchase money.”
