WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Selecting Representative Teams SATURDAY’S TRIALS Women's hockey trial matches from which teams will be selected to represent Wellington at the New Zealand tournament, against Tlorowhenua tor the Baker Burata Memorial Cup, and against Wairarapa, were played on Saturday. Conditions were uot the best, light rain falling practically throughout, the late games. Senior A matches, which were originally set down to he played at Kilbirnie, were transferred to'Newtown Bark, the sudden change causing some players to be late for the early match. The condition of No. 1 ground, Newtown, particularly at the southern end, was not good, and made it difficult for the players to master the ball. Despite this inconvenience, file standard of play was high and the games interesting. Some excellent individual work was noted. Both the A’s and B’s and Brobabies and Possibles’ matches resulted in draws. At Karori Bark the senior B trial match also ended in a draw. Sonic promising talent was noticed in the junior, intermediate and third grades games. SENIOR A MATCHES A Drawn Game. Tu the match between the A and B teams, the A team was handicapped by playing short in the first spell. They hold their own very well, however, ’rite first goal of the match went to the B's, Miss C. Wells being the scorer. This was shortly followed up by the left-wing, Miss S. Jackson, giving the B's a two<mals lead. The A’s settled down and took a more serious view of the position, and after a few determined efforts Miss M. Black netted. The final and equalising goal of the match went to Miss M. Malpas with n smart flick shot, the game ending in a draw. Messrs. K. Brennan and K. J. Lloyd were the umpires. Possibles v. Probables. The selector’s (Miss M. AA'ilkins) task was made more difficult by the good standard displayed in the Possibles v. Probables match, several players giving outstanding performances. Particularly might this be said of Miss I- Pickering, right-wing, who played a magnificent "■ime her ball control tn the bad patch at the south end of the field being marvellous; Mrs. A. Smith, who gave a grand display at full-back for Possibles, saving her team time and again and always being a source of annoyance to the opposing forwards; Mips M. Simpson. Possibles’ centre-half, who excelled hcrselt in the position ; Miss 11. Morris, centre-forward; Miss M. Gunson, Possibles left-wing, and Miss B. Mills, Possibles’ centreforward. Both goalkeepers were not oiven an opportunity to show their true capabilities. Play on the whole was faster and much more interesting than the earlv game. Mrs. F. Sundgrcn secured Possibles’ goal, and Miss M. Gunson equalised for Probables, the result being a draw. , . . Messrs. A. Roxburgh and 11. Tahini were the umpires. SENIOR B TRIAL Forwards Disappoint. The standard displayed in the senior B trial game at Karori Park was only fair, both sets of forwards being disappointing. In the first spell each team scored two goals, Misses M. Fuller and B. Chittenden netting for the A’s, and Misses G. Petley and K. Strickland for the B's. The selector, Mr. S. Brugh, made several changes in both teams for the second spell. Play then became more interesting, but several promising players who were expected to show up to advantage did not do so. The game ended in a draw of 4 goals each, later scorers being Misses K. O’Brien and M. It tiller for'"the A’s, and Miss G. Polley and Mrs. V. Polling for the B’s. Messrs. S. P. Todd and D. 11*. Harwood were the umpires. Intermediate beat Thirds. Far more players than expected assembled at Newtown Park for the intermediate and third grade trial match. Die selector, Mr. E. Lower, chose the teams and in a well-fought game the intermediate side won by two goals to one. Mr. A. Atkins was the umpire.
