LECTERN DEDICATED

J. Armour Thomson Memorial ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH CEREMONY 'The unveiling and dedication of a lectern erected as a memorial to the late Mr. J. Armour Thomson, took place at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wellington, yesterday. The ceremony was part of the morning service, which was conducted by the minister of the church, Rev. A. B. Kilroy. The lectern, of handsome design, was presented by Mrs. and Miss Thomson, and is regarded as a fitting memorial to one whose life was so bound up witti that of the church. The late Mr. Thomson was ordained an cider as far back ns ISSS, and since 1921 had filled the office of session clerk. The hymn -For All the Saints” after the address preceded the unveiling of Hie lectern by the donors, and its dedication by the minister.

Speaking from the text. Hebrews xii:l, “Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,” Mr. Kilroy said:— “It was a happy thought on the part of the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews when he linked the communion of saints with the ancient crowd watching Hie athletic spectacle. For us to-day there is a peculiar fitness in that comparison when we remember that he whom we especially honour was in liis time no mean competitor on the field of sport. As the years went by he proved himself no mean competitor in the arena of life. Just as in Hie realm of sport the presence of those who in days gone by have acquitted themselves nobly is an incentive to the competitors of to-day, so in the nobler field the presence of those who have finished their course and have kept the faith nerves us to be not unworthy of all their love and devotion. Especially does it nerve us when we remember that we are made one with them through Him who is the Captain of our salvation.”
