OBITUARY

Mrs. C. E. Devore A former mayores sof Auckland, Mrs. Charlotte Elizabeth Devore, St. Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell, died on the eve of her 85th birthday, an Auckland Press Association message states. Her husband, Mr. A. E. T. Devore, with the late Mr. J. B. Russell, established the legal firm of Russell and Devore, and, until his death in 1916, was one of Auckland’s leading solicitors. In 1882 he was elected to the city council, and bold office unopposed as mayor from 1886 to 1889. .Airs. Devore retained many memories of the older social life of Auckland and of numerous past Governors and GovernorsGeneral, including Sir George Grey, Sir Hercules Robinson, the Earl 'of Glasgow, the Earl of Onslow, Lord Ranfurly, Lord Plunket and Lord Islington. She possessed a remarkable collection of invitations to Royal and vice-regal functions, mementoes of distinguished people whom she had met, photographs and newspaper cuttings dating from 1870 onward.
