New Zealand won the so-called second “Test” against Scotland by an innings and 52 runs. New Zealand made 259 for eight wickets, declared, and Scotland were dismissed for 53 and 154. There was no play before lunch. New Zealand were favoured by the weather, as rain and sun continued to make the wicket difficult. After Page had been dismissed quickly, Donnelly batted brilliantly in a partnership which added 50 runs for the eighth wicket at great pace. New Zealand declared when four hours remained for play. Scotland collapsed in the first innings. Donnelly made good use of the wicket, keeping a good length and spinning the ball well. Gibb batted brightly in the second innings, but there was little opposition from the ‘ other batsmen. Gallichan, who was unable to strike a length In the first innings, bowled with excellent control in the second, having the best analysis of the tour. An encouraging feature was that Roberts bowled in both innings without discomfort. It is now probable that he will be able to play in the Test. The New Zealanders will stay the night at Dunfermline and will travel to-morrow to Manchester. Details NEW ZEALAND—First Innings. . Hadlee, 1.b.w.. b. Farquhar 59 Gallichan. c. Gibb, b. ENGLISH TEST TEAM “Safety First” Policy London, July 22. C. G. Macartney, writing in the “Sydney Morning Herald,” says:— “England’s cricket team which is to meet New Zealand in the second Test seems to point to the selectors having adopted a ‘safety-first’ policy and encouragement of players of the future is lacking. The English side is strong, and should be superior to New Zealand.- There appears to exist in England plenty of good material, but the small amount of encouragement it receives does not allow it to develop along the proper lines.” WOMEN’S MATCH DRAWN London, July 22. The Australian w’omen’s cricket team played a drawn match with Middlesex. Scores are: Australia, 240 for three, declared (Miss Holmes 54, Miss Hudson 74, Miss Antonio 96). Middlesex, 115 for nine (Miss Lee 36; Miss Walsh three for 12, Miss Holmes two for 7).
