ROYAL GARDEN PARTY
Convention Defied by Many Guests (British Official Wireless.) (Received July 23, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, July 22. More than 10,000 guests attended the Royal garden party at Buckingham Palace this afternoon. The absence of Princess Elizabeth from the Royal circle was noted and it became known that the reason was a sprained knee which she had received in falling from her bicycle in the Palace grounds on Monday. The injury is not serious. Mr. Roger Lumley, the new Governor of Bombay, and Mrs. Lumley, were the guests of the King and Queen at luncheon at Buckingham Palace. Members of the Japanese commercial mission at present in England were received by the King during the afternoon, and before the Royal garden party the King also received Senor De Olviero, the Brazilian Ambassador, and invested him with the insignia of Knight Grand Cross of the Victorian Order. More men than ever defied convention at the Royal garden party at Buckingham Palace by wearing lounge suits and felt hats, states a Press Association cablegram. A big proportion of men and women on the main lawns indulged in smoking, which would have been frowned on a few years ago. The Duchess of Kent followed fashion by lighting a cigarette while at tea with Their Majesties and other Royalties in a special tent.
