Use of Adult Apprentices System MANY APPLICATIONS IN AUCKLAND Dominion Special Service. Auckland, July 23. Since tiie Acting-Minister of Labour, Hon. I’. U. Webb, suggested that Hie difficulties attendant on placing youths of 18 years and upward in skilled trades might be overcome in many instances by using the adult apprentices} system, there has been a large number of applications to the Labour Depart-’ meat in Auckland from those desirous) of taking advantage of the opportunity* presented. Since April 1 there have; been 25 adult apprentice contracts in Auckland approved and completed by the Acting-Minister, who is now investigating many other applications. Ages of apprentices concerned in tiie contracts completed range from 18 to 30 years. The Acting-Minister of Labour has acted under Section (7) of the Statutes Amendment Act, which provides that any person who lias attained the age of IS years and upward may, with the approval of the Minister of Labour, enter into a contract of apprenticeship for such period and upon such terms and conditions as in the circumstances the Minister thinks reasonable and equitable. This section is in substitution of Section 11 of the Apprentices Act and its amendments.
