HOBBY CLUB

Book-markers From Parchment.

These clever book-markers, fashioned from parchment paper or thick drawing paper with applied decorations or water-colours, are easily made, and will prove splendid birthday presents.

you can see from the drawing, they slip easily oyer the righthand top corner of the page. Several different styles are shown, so you will be able to make a different one for every member of the family! , To make one, cut a semi-circle of parchment paper, measuring 6Jin. along the base. Fold this over in half, and from one straight edge cut a strip

a quarter of an inch deep, making a shape as shown, opened in the sketch. Fold this edge over the other edge of the semi-circle, and gum them together. This will make a neat, strong joint. The design can either be drawn directly on the parchment, and coloured, or drawn on white drawing paper, coloured, ent out, and gummed on. This method gives a greater contrast in colour. The girl’s hat is coloured blue, with a black band, while the outlines are darker blue, and ■ decoration is added by small dashes. The hair is black, the lips red, and the cheeks are tinted pink. The face and neek are outlined in light brown. Cut out the head and stick it in position on the parchment. While gumming the design, press it flat with clean blotting

paper. Finally, cut around the outline, following closely the shape of the face. In the lower corners are two markers with floral designs. The flowers and leaves should be coloured with water colours, the top flower being purple, with a blue centre and the inner petals yellow, outlined with blue. The one below is orange, with purple centre, and the right-hand flower is

purple, with centre outlined in green. The bell flower is blue, and the leaves are jade green. All the design is outlined in darker shades. In the middle of the sketches you can see two simple markers, which just slip between the leaves to show where you left off reading. These are made from slips of parchment, decorated in various ways. At the top of the first one is a bowl of coloured flowers cut from tinted paper, and gummed in place, while the other marker has a design in the shape of a lighted candle. Cut the candle-stick from green paper, the candle from yellow, and the flame from red. Gum these parts in place, and print the motto in black. The fringed edges will improve the appearance of the markers.
