Coaching in Hawke’s Bay
The first coach to run between Napier and Te Aide began in 1859, and was extended to Waipukurau in ISO". In 1875 the Manawatu Gorge bridge was completed, and Mr. Andrew Young, the coaching pioneer in WellingtonWest Coast routes, ran a service from Palmerston North to function wifli Peter’s coaches at: Waipukurau. In 1873 tlie railway began at Napier, and four years later reached Takapau. Napier and Palmerston North were not connected by rail until 1891.—D.M. (Foxton).
