PEDESTRIANS OFFEND

“Jay-walking” & Disregard of Traffic Lights

WARNING PROSECUTIONS The first prosecutions of pedestrians for failing to cross the road at rightangles and failing to obey the traffic lights were brought in the Magistrate’s Court Wellington, yesterday, by the .Wellington City Council, represented by Mr. A, R. Cooper. A number of motorists were prosecuted also for failing to give way to pedestrians on authorised crossings. Mr. Cooper said the prosecutions of pedestrians covered “jay walking” and failure to observe the regulations, and were brought as a warning. In spite of a number of excellent articles in the newspapers and frequent warnings by inspectors, it appeared that no headway would be made until offenders were prosecuted. With respect to the failure of pedestrians to obey the traffic lights, he said, this duty was laid upon them by the regulations of 1936. Pedestrians had since then taken no notice of them, and had not been warned about their observance. H e asked that the motorists and pedestrians now prosecuted as a warning should be convicted and discharged. The magistrate, .Mr. W. F. Stilwell: I think your office will be pretty busy for a while. , ' The pedestrian offenders dealt with as suggested were Arnold Glenson, George Guelph, John Fraser McLean, George Berryman, Herbert Charles, George Draji, Frank Arthur Ross, Noel Underhill, Roy Watson, Alex Wilson, Leslie David Young. The mo.torists convicted of failing to give way to pedestrians were. Bennett, Robert Cameron, Henry George Hawkins, James Keeling, Leslie ' McDonald, Mervja Sunderland, Yew Tong, and William John Elliott.
