NAVY LEAGUE WORK
Talks in the Schools Restrictions imposed during the last two years on Navy League talks in schools have considerably hampered the activities in Wellington and Marlborough. states the report of the Wellington branch of the league which is io be presented at the .annual meeting on Monday night. The report expresses the hope that the education board will in the near future revert to the system of allowing talks to be given to the children during school hours, as they are regarded as the most valuable part of the branch’s work. During the depression years, the report slates, the finances of the branch were very much depleted and the surplus of assets over liabilities at the end of 1936 was reduced to only £573/1/8, of which £lOO was earmarked for the Palmer Prize Fund. In the six years ended June 30. 1937 rhe secretary. .Mr. R. Darroeh. to whom thanks are accorded for his excellent and untiring work, gave £6OO from his salary, thereby very materially helping Ihe league to carry on its educational work. “With the passing of Britain’s huge rearmament vote of £1,150,000.000 and the realisation that the self-governing Dominions must look to their own defences, the attitude of (lie people underwent a great change, and a largelyincreased membership is assured to build up the necessary public opinion in support of the defence policy of the Government and the Empire,” says the report. I Appreciative reference is made iu the I report to the work of the sub-branches, I the women’s auxiliary, and the junior' branch.
