GERMAN CRITICISM

Australian Speaker at Berlin Congress London, July 5. The Berlin correspondent of the Australian Associated Press says: “Australia’s part in the Congress of the International Chambers of Commerce was virtually limited to the opening day, June 28.’ Unfortunately, the spirit of her delegates was misunderstood by Germany, Herr Trendelenburg, deputy head of the Reich Economic Chamber, point-blank describing Mr. A. E. Heath’s arguments as wrong, and affirming that colonies were Germany’s all-important consideration. “The Press took up the cry that Mr. Heath misunderstood the position, which it was stated could not. permanently be bettered, without colonies. “Nevertheless, Mr. Heath impressed other nations. “Sir Hal Colebatch rendered less conspicuous service as chairman of the finance section. In addition to many addresses at social functions, at which he 'emphasised that such functions helped men to thaw and speak their minds more freely, he met the German Minister for Economics, Dr. H. Schacht, and the Minister for Propaganda, Dr. Joseph Goebbels." Mr. Heath, who is Agent-General for New .South Wales in London, represented the Australian National Committee. Sir Hal Colebatch is AgentGeneral for Western Australia in London.
