ROAD CYCLING
| Grand National Cup Race ! TRIUMPH FOR C. BIGGS Slow Times from Massed Start (By Go Fast.) On Saturday the final road cycling race for the Grand National Cup was held, and C. Biggs scored a complete triumph. He won rhe handicap, and also gained fastest time, beating McDonald by 4min. The Petone chib has had a good season up rill now. and the prospects are for better races. Mr. Biggs, father of the three road riders-—Charlie, Henry ■mb Hives, .inn.—puts : n some good official work, as on race days Mr. Biggs is handicapper, limekeeper rind judge. There seems to be a shortage of officials in Wellington at the present time. Poneke Club’s Itaces. The Poneke club held a club race of 20 miles for seniors, nnd a 14-mile race for juniors. The veteran Evans led the field home to win by a narrow margin from Jelly nnd Huxford. who deadheated. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Ulmer, who has registered fastest time on many occasions. Dutton won hv two-fifths of a second, which indicates that form must be coming this rider’s way. Sinclair has ridden well this season so far. but. according to results, he dnes not warrant starting from the scratch mark. Port Nicholson Form. The Port Nicholson club conducted a flfl-niile massed start, and an eight-mile I race for juniors, which turned out to he a farce. I was given to understand this | week from the officials that this type of ! racing does more harm than good. The slow tncties adopted throu-hout the first two rounds wer' painful to watch, the time for the first two rounds being 1.24. and the time for the three rounds was 1 “9 oomt'aro-1 with a three-round han- | dienp two weeks ago. when the time was 1.23. The iunior section is showing good form. Cowan. Walsh. Cundiffe nnd McEwan should go well when in open company next Saturday, and a hard handicap mnn must be K. Carpenter. Sparkes. Webher. Conner. Caldwell and Goey all have good performances this year-, and it is hard to try and even tip the junior champion for September 11. Riders in Form. O. Disley : Riding better every week; third fastest time last week’s 33 miles. E. Rohi'-'snn : Elected club captain for the Port 'Nicholson club; riding well at present. W. Keighley: Improving each week: could do with some longer rides; up to 40 to 45 miles, every Sunday morning. L. Sowerby: Improving: very slow; seems to have a bad position on his machine. R. Evans: Improving rapidly: will be hard to beat in the handicap for the 50 provincial title on September 11. To-day’s Race. mb, Wel’meton v. Masterton contest of 25 miles will take place at 3 p.m. to-day. starting at the fire station. Afternoon ! tea will be provided at the conclusion of the race in the Star Boating Club’s rooms. Association Changes. Cyclists will regret the loss of Mr. C. Clarke from the New Zealand Cycling Association. Mr. Clark resigned at last week’s association meeting. Mr. C. V. Aldridge, veteran cyclist, of Wellington, has accepted the position ar; j delegate for the Auckland Cycling Centre on the New Zealand Cycling Association.
