Nelson Pioneer

“E.G..” Feilding, is not quite correct in stating that Mr. 11. Redwood, one of Nelson’s early English pioneers, earned for himself the title “Father of the New Zealand Turf.” It was not Mr. Henry Redwood, sen., but his son Henry, who was known throughout New 'Zealand by this title, on account of his early and continued labour on behalf of horse racing. Mr. Redwood w,as at one time extensively engaged in the importation and training of horses, and he brought several shipments of thoroughbred stock to New Zealand. It was at Renwicktown, Marlborough, that the first horse races were run in the district, this event taking place on January 10 and 11, 1854. In 1863 Mr. Redwood took up a large farm at Spring Creek, Marlborough, where two years later lie established a flour mill. —E.M.E. (Blenheim).
