CHORAL UNION TO SING “AIDA”
Verdi’s "Aida,” which is to be performed at the Town Hall next Thursday evening by the Royal Wellington Choral Union, is not a simple work. All the music is written for voices of great range, and even the minor roles require voices of exceptional range and flexibility. It is therefore a matter' of great difficulty to east the opera for concert purposes with the confidence that al! will be well. The committee has arranged an exceptionally strong cast. Miss Thea Philips, of London, who is a leading soprano from Covent Garden, has sustained the name part in this opera on numbers of ooecasions. The difficult tenor role has been entrusted to Mr. Lionello Cecil, who is regarded by critics as the finest in Australia to-day. Miss Mina Callow, Auckland, will sing the music written for Aurneris, Mr. Harison Cook that of Ramphis. Mr. Russell Laurenson will undertake Amonasro's music, and the other soloists will be Miss Muriel Hitchings, Messrs. Ken Strong and J. O. Bonifant. The performance will be conducted by Mr. Stanley Oliver.
