TRAMPING POPULAR

Number of Private Trips Increases HUTT VALLEY CLUB The growing tendency for trampers to organise private trips throughout the year and during the Christmas and Easter vacations was referred to in the annual report of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club, which was presented at the annual meeting. , . , “Although, generally speaking, this has led to a falling off in the number who participate in official trips, it should be realised that more people are feeling the call of the out-doors, and members are keenly organising trips locally and further afield,” stated the report. “The foregoing should be regarded by this and other tramping clubs with satisfaction and not with pessimism, for such a state in tramping denotes a fulfilment of our ideals in encouraging as many as possible to take an active interest in our hills and valleys. The co-relation of club and private trips, too, must greatly assist in the compilation of topographical knowledge of the .more remote areas of New Zealand.”

The report recorded that an active interest in ski-ing was being taken by an increasing number of members, but because of unsatisfactory weather conditions no inter-dub ski competitions were held, though the club was able to run off its own championships during the season. At the dose of the dub’s year there were 159 members on the roll. Considerable expenditure had been incurred in the purchase of new equipment, and in the renovation of existing equipment. The dub placed on record its approval of the plan to conserve the Tararua Ranges and contiguous areas as a permanent National Park.
