SOCIAL SERVICE
Report Placed Before Synod
SUCCESSFUL ENDEAVOURS A year of steady and successful endeavour was reported to the Wellington Diocesan Synod yesterday by the Diocesan Social Service Board. Mr. H. A. Huggins presented the report. Various benefactions enabled institutions connected with Hie board to show a credit balance on the year’s working account, an achievement not previously attained. St. Mary’s Guild had S 3 residents at the close of last year. Against a credit balance of £226 were to be set bequests of £350 from the Nuffield Trust, and £l5O from the Mills Estate. The Anglican Boys’ Homes Society
had taken a marked step forward in a building programme at Sedgley. The new home would accommodate 30 boys, and enable more of the elder lads to be trained as efficient farmers. There were 53 boys in residence at Lower Hutt, and 15 at Sedgley. The results from Sedgley farm had been very satisfactory. An acre for a camp at Stokes Valley had been given by Mr. J. Clulow. A credit balance of £l7B was offset by non-recurring donations from
the Nuffield Trust £350, and the Mills legacy of £SO.> St. Barnabas Babies’ Horae was re-
ported to be filled to capacity. There was a constant demand for admission. A credit balance of £283 was offset by non-recurring items—Nuffield Trust £250, Mills legacy £BO. All Saints’ Children’s Home, at Palmerston North, continues to provide a beautiful home for some 30 children. A credit balance of £B3 was offset by legacies of £254.
The Wellington City Mission had vigorously continued its varied and numerous activities. Though the general position had improved, there were still many requiring assistance. In the men’s shelter there were 57 in residence and 102 receiving meals daily, also 60 old-age pensioners for a daily dinner. Mission workers had provided 11 clergy and one Church Army captain. During last year 20 were confirmed. The sum of £478 was spent in relief.
The Missions to Seamen had made steady progress. Again the year’s expenditure on social service work had exceeded £13,000, the figures being £13,304, as compared with £13,065 in the previous year. Further expansion was under serious consideration.
