DISTRICT JOTTINGS

More Girls Leaving HUTT VALLEY ' HIGH SCHOOL The feature of the position al the Hutt Valley High School this year was the relatively high number of girls leaving—--19 out of . total of 33—whereas last year it was only 11 in a total of 49, stated the May report of the principal to the board of governors at last night's meeting. The principal stated that since the report in April 13 boys and 15 girls had left, while two boys and three girls had been added to the roll, making the total 420 (248 boys and 172 girls). Up to the present fewer pupils had left than was the case last year, the numbers being 1936 49, 1937 33. There was a big demand for oflice girls, and the school had not been able to supply girls for all the positions offering. The number of boys leaving had been small—l 4 out of a total of 33 as against 38 out of a total of 49 last year. Just as many positions seemed to be offering for boys, but last year’s tendency of seizing any jobs vacant seems to have been corrected, and boys were now waiting for the jobs that they wanted. King George V Fund. The following is the position of the King George V Memorial Fund at Upper Hutt: —Previously acknowledged, £97/7/1; Mrs. Gibbons, 2/6; A. C. Gifford, £2/2/-; Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Russell and sons, £1; Miss Taylor, 2/-; Nemo, 2/6; Mrs. Croft, sen., 1/-; Mrs. L. T. Howe, 2/6; Mrs. Williams, 2/6; F. Hercock, £1; Sven Roband, 2/-; total, £lO5/19/7. No Cause for Complaint. The Director-General of Health visited the sanitary depot on June 11, and was satisfied with the depot and the work carried out, reported the inspector, Mr. C. E. H. Yarnell, to the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night. The report added that the director-general expressed the opinion that he could find no cause for complaint. Not a Rotary Club. Permission was granted a religious organisation by the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night to conduct meetings on a street corner in the borough. Cr. J. S. Baskett suggested the organisation should give all the corners in the borough a turn. The mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy : “It is a religious body, not a rotary club.” Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. Mrs. J. D. King presided over the May meeting of the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary. Arrangements were discussed for the holding of a juiuble sale and cake and produce stall in the Y.M.C.A. rooms, Petone, on July 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. and W. Miller. Eastbourne Bus Service. The new bus on order for the Eastbourne service would probably be on the road next month, stated the mayor, Mr. E. W. Wise, at the annual meeting of the Eastbourne Ratepayers’ Association last night. Delay had been experienced in getting the chassis shipped to New Zealand, but it was now in the hands of the. bodybuilders, and patrons of the service would not have to wait much longer for it.

Good Response at Short Notice. The response of pupils of the Hutt Valley High School, at a day’s notice, to the King George V Memorial Fund was £8 19/-, it was reported to the board of gov ernors last night. Personal.

Mr. J. Stonehouse was re-elected chairman of the board of governors of Hutt Valley High School lust night. Mr. C. Dowland was elected treasurer. Other elections were :—Appointments committee, Messrs. Stonehouse, S. Hunter, C. Dowland, D. A. Ewen; works committee, Messrs. H. G. Teagle, W. Dyer, A. H. Spencer, and J. S. Hunter.

Upper Hutt Station. A scissors crossing, the same as at Lower Hutt, would be provided at tlie Upper Hutt railway station ae soon as finance permitted, said tie mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, at last light’s meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council. This would enable all passengers to alight ou the station platform. The existing system whereby passengers bad on occasions to cross lines had existed since 1876 without accident.

Upper Hutt Housing. “The people who desire us to help them do nothing to help themselves; they want the council to do everything for them,” said the mayor, Mr. A. J. MeCurdy, at last night’s meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council in regard to the borough housing scheme. The council could advertise its intention of raising a loan, and if five per cent, of the ratepayers did not object a poll would be unnecessary. Application could then be made through the Local Government Loans Board.
