NEWSPAPER COMMENT
New Zealand Cricketers’ Opening Match THE CRITICS IMPRESSED (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.) with the Team.) London, May 9. The Sunday newspapers almost unanimously praise the New Zealand cricket team for the successful opening of its tour against Surrey. The critics were particularly impressed by the bowling of A. W. Roberts, the batting of W. N. Carson, and the fielding of M. W. Wallace and M. P. Donnelly. N. Gallichan appears in a cartoon in the “News of the World” as the "Last, but by no means the least.” 11. G. Vivian’s cover-drive is pictured in a sports reel across a page of the "Sunday Dispatch.” The team was feted at. a dinner given by the Surrey Cricket Club in the historic Armourers’ and Glaziers’ Hall. ’The New Zealand Minister of Finance,
Mr. W. Nash, and the High Commissioner, Mr. W. J. Jordan, were present. Sir Stanley Jackson toasted the team and the Earl of Midleton proposed the toast of "New Zealand.” It is evident that the second game, opening on Wednesday against the M.C.C., at Lord’s, will be a stern test, as the M.C.C. team will include seven leading amateurs and four able professionals. The team has been selected as follows:—R. E. S. Wyabt (captain), Moore, T. N. Pearce. J. W. A. Stephenson, A. D. Baxter, S. C. Griffith, .1. 11. Human, E. Hendren, W. J. Edrich, D. C. S. Compton and J. M. Sims. MATCH WITH SURREY Resumption Delayed by Rain (Received May 10, 11.30 p.m.) London, May 10.
