BILBAO EVACUATIONS
Three French Steamers (Received May 10, 9.30 p.m.) Bilbao, May 10. The French steamers Carimare, Chateau Margaux, and Chateau Palmer, accompanied by armed trawlers and under the protection of the shore batteries, departed for Pauillac with 2200 aged people and women and children refugees. French destroyers safeguarded the convoy outside territorial waters. FAVOURED IN PRINCIPLE Germany and Abolition of Inhuman Warfare London, May 9. An official spokesman in Berlin, referring to the proposal of the chairman of the Non-Intervention in Spain Committee, Lord Plymouth, to abolish air bombing of open towns in Spain, said that Germany in principle favours the prohibition of inhuman warfare, but all such must be suppressed. It was useless to pick out one, thus possibly benefiting one side. Unofficial opinion in Rome criticises the plan owing to difficulties of impartiality. ORDERED TO LEAVE Refugees in Gibraltar London, Mrfy 9. On the ground that the fortress is overcrowded and military movements Impeded, all Spanish refugees, numbering about 2000, have been ordered to leave Gibraltar by Thursday. They will be transported by warship to a port under the control of the Spanish Government. A njpgsag.e from Toulouse states that 29 Americans, who were arrested and charged with attempting to enter Spain to join the Government, were sentenced to 40 days’ imprisonment. BARCELONA CASUALTIES Barcelona, May 9. One hundred and ninety-three people are lying dead in the mortuaries as a result of fighting, and 343 wounded are in hospital.
