CORONATION HONOURS
In the list of honours conferred by His Majesty the King on the occasion of his Coronatjpn the New Zealand list will be scanned with interest, and with general satisfaction. A feature of the list is the unusual number of women who have been rewarded for service in various fields. In the nursing profession alone there are ten awards of the M.8.E., while the Women’s Division of the New. Zealand Farmers’ Union has received two awards of the 0.8. E. There are the usual proportion of awards to the fighting and the civil services, and it is worthy of note that two senior non-commissioned officers of long and faithful service have been included. Sir Michael Myers’s elevation to G.C.M.G., is no doubt in recognition of the fact that he assumes vice-regal duties and responsibilities in the absence from the country of the Governor-General. Sir Charles Norwood through valued service to the Wellington community as a former mayor, a city councillor, a prominent member of local associations of one kind and another, and his association with the Crippled Children’s Fund has worthily earned the honour of knighthood. Civic service is also recognised in the bestowal of a knighthood upon Sir Ernest Davis, Mayor of Auckland. Education has been honoured by a knighthood to Sir Algernon Thomas, Professor Emeritus of Auckland University College, and the fine arts by an 0.8. E. to that distinguished painter, Mr. Sidney Thompson. Another award of interest which will be highly appreciated by the Maori race is the C.B.E. to the Princess Te Puea Herangi, of Ngaruawahia. On the whole merit and community service have received due recognition, and women especially should be greatly gratified.
