Lower Hutt Loan Polls

TIME NOT OPPORTUNE

'The report of a special committee which considered loan polls advised the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night that in its opinion the time was not opportune for putting loan polls before the ratepayers. It also advised the council that it was further of the opinion that certain works, or portions of them, referred to it for consideration should be done out of revenue.

Building Progress. During April, 29 building permits io the value of £19,705 were issued by the Lower Hutt Borough Council. The total included 13 dwellings representing £lB,198, an average of £1476 each. In April, 1936, 25 permits of a value of £19,700 were issued.

Thirty-one Years a Fireman. Fireman B. Fleet, who bos served thp Lower Hutt Fire Brigade for oyer 31 years, has resigned because of his age. The Lower Hutt Borough Council voted a sum of money last night to defray the costs of a social function at which the borough could honour Fireman Fleet foj his service'. Moera Hall Committee.

The following committee has been appointed for the Moera Community Hall: —Mandel block : Messrs. G. Sutherland and F. Collings; Eglinton block: Messrs. Perry and J. Dunn; Awamptu block: Mr. W. Burns.

Moera Tar-sealing. “While the Government has every sympathy with the council in its difficulties arising from non-payment of rates, it is regretted that it has no funds available to accede to your request.” stated a letter from the Acting-Prime Minister, Hon. P. Fraser, in reference to the Lower Hutt Borough Council’s request that the Government should contribute toward the cost of tar-sealing the roads in Moera. The advice was received at last night’s meeting. Manor Park Golf Club.

A pleasant evening was spent by about 100 members of the Manor Park Golf Club on Saturday evening at the Brown Owl Cabaret, Upper Hutt, on the occasion of the silver wedding of the president of the club, Mr. Butler. Mr. and Mrs. Butler received a silver tea service in appreciation of services given to the club over a long period. The presentation was made by the honorary secretary, Mr. J. L. Barnard. Those responsible for the organisation of the evening, Messrs. I. V. O. Duncan and C. Sawyers, were complimented on its success. Among those present were Mrs. C. Sawyers, Misses Kerr, Fairbrother, Ling, Nash, and Mureagh, Mrs. J. Barnard, Mr. and Mrs. A. Radford, Mr. and Mrs. S. Waugh, Messrs. Monahan, Heard, McGrath, Meacheni, Jones, Howe, Mr. and Mrs. Hipkins, Messrs. Payne. Cockburne, Kinley, Stratmore, Logan, Wilson, Low, Murphy, Quinnell, E. Butler, D. Butler, and numerous members of Shandon, Titahi, and Waiwetu Clubs.

Methodist Girls’ Club. The usual meeting of the Kia Hiwi Methodist Girls’ Club took place at the home of Mrs. Robinson, High Street, Lower Hutt. The vice-captain. Mrs. Wilfred Jones, presided. There was a good attendance. The Rev. Mr . Thornley spoke interestingly of a stay during his vacation at the Epsom Methodist Orphanage, Auckland. Mr. Thornley said he was the “handy-man” of the orphanage for the time being, and eo gained an insight into the wonderful work being accomplished. The orphanage was a home not an institution/ and each child was treated as an individual. The Epsom Orphanage was set amidst, beautiful surroundings, and the children responded in a wonderful manner to the splendid training and loving treatment they received.

Coronation Services. Special services will be held on Coronation Day at St. Augustine’s Church, Petone, commencing with a solemn celebration of Holy Communion at 8 a.m. At 11 a.m. there will be a combined service under the auspices of the Ministers’ Association. The music will be led by a combined choir of 50. The service will be the printed form fqr Coronation Day to be used throughout the Empire, and copies will be available for the congregation. The collections at both services will be devoted to the King George V memorial fund.
