“Bon Voyage” Afternoon pleasant afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs. C. F. Petherick, Oueen’s Drive, Lyall Bay, last Saturday in honour of Mrs. F. S. Driller, who is leaving for a holiday in Australia. The hostess received the guests wearing a frock of blue floral satin crepe. The guest of honour, who was wearing an oyster-grey winter. silk with navy trimming and accessories to tone', was presented with a beautiful bouquet of carnations and maidenhair fern on behalf of her daughter, Mrs. C. Hendren, who lives in Dunedin, and also many gifts from the guests for use on her tour. The rooms were tastefully decorated in autumn tonings and a delicious afternoon tea was served. Two amusing competitions were won by Miss E. Driller. The afternoon was brought to a close with musical honours. Among those present were Mesdames Sowry, Moore, Petherick (Paraparaumu), Brown, King, Hendren, Stewart, Misses Driller, Hendren, Petherick (Paraparaumu), and Johnson. Tennis Club Dance Members of the Brougham Hill Tennis Club and their friends gathered in full force on Saturday night for the club’s annual dance, which was held in a studio in the city. A spirit of gaiety was evident from start to finish, and one and all made the most of several hours’ dancing in the most pleasant surroundings. During the evening a buffet supper was served. The committee responsible for the arrangements comprised Mrs. N. St. Clair Dickson (who wore a frock of floral satin with taffeta coatee to match), Miss Winnie Male (pink floral georgette over satin), Miss Marie Everton (flame satin with black velvet coatee), Mr. N. St. Clair Dickson, Mr. Claude Dixon, and Mr. Garth Button (who undertook the office of M.C.). Prizes were won by Miss tV. Male and Mr. Aitken (Monte Carlo), and Miss Atwood and Mr. Vere Dixon (statue waltz). An exhibition of the waltz and quickstep was much appreciated by all. Morning Tea Party

Miss Doris Black, Mrs. D. V. Claridge and Mrs. M. G. Phelan, members of tlie committee of the EnglishSpeaking Union, were the hostesses at a delightful morning tea party at Kirkfl Idie and Stains’ yesterday, for the

six “queens” who will take part in the pageant at the E.S.U. Coronation Ball to-night. The party also gave Miss Black, who will leave for a trip to England this week, an opportunity of bidding farewell to some of her friends. Those present were: Mrs, A. E. Webb, Mrs. C. Charlesworth, Mrs. Vic tor S. Lloyd, Miss E. Macintosh, Miss Charlesworth, Miss Barbara Joyce Phelan, Miss Helen .Hoodie, Mrs. H. L, Cummings, .Mrs. A. Burnard, Mrs. S. Eaton, Mrs. J. C. Bradley. Spilt Ink Club Bowls of brightly-coloured chrysanthemums toning with Die cream walls made a pleasant setting for the last meeting of the Spilt Ink Club, Held recently in the University Women’s Clubrooms. Mrs. Sinclair Burns, who was on the staff of a metropolitan newspaper for many years as children’s editor, was the speaker for the evening, and had many amusing and interesting experiences to relate. During the evening *Miss I. Ashenden entertained by singing two original compositions by Mrs. Spurway. a club member. The evening was brought to a conclusion with supper.

Farewell Afternoon Miss Myra Post, who will leave Wellington to-day by the Port Dunedin for England, was guest of honour on Saturday afternoon at a farewell afternoon given for her by her sisters, Mrs. Lindsay Gilmour and Mrs. John Gamble, at the former’s home in Lower Hutt. A number of Miss Post’s friends had been asked to say good-bye to her, and all present took the opportunity of wishing her good luck both for her trip and for her stay in England. The guests were entertained in the spacious draw-ing-room, where masses of autumntinted chrysanthemums and hydrangeas were arranged with great effect. Mra. Gilmour was wearing an American frock of coronation blue and Mrs. Gamble was in a blue suit, with felt hat to matcl) and furs. Miss Post’s frock was of brown and gold, her hat being of brown. Coronation Ball.

To-morrow (Coronation Day) is the date arranged for the ball organised by the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries, which will take place in St. Franeis Hall. This ball is expected to be one of the outstanding features of Coronation Week, and will afford many who are fond of dancing an excellent opportunity of spending the gala night in the most enjoyable way possible. Special decorations will adorn the hall, there will be an excellent orchestra, and some entertaining divertissement in a ballet and exhibition dances.

Football Club Dance. The Onslow Association Football t’lub hold a successful opening-of-the-season dance in the Ngaio Town Hall recently, there being a large attendance of players ami friends. Supper was served by the members of the ladies’ committee, consisting of Mesdames Hilston, A. Cowan, J. Cowan, Lawrence, De Huffnlc, Stockdale. Goddard. V. McIntyre and Muir. Prizes were won for novelty dances during tlie evening by Miss Hard and Mr. Phillips (monte carlo) and Miss and Mr. De liuffnie (statue dance). Afternoon Tea. Miss M. Lewis was hostess at a happy afternoon tea party held at the D.T.C., the guest of honour being Miss Jean Evans, on whom was recently conferred tlie degree of Bachelor of Arts. Tlie tea table was decorated with a basket of bronze dahlias, and during tlie serving of tea all present book the opportunity of congratulating Miss Evans. Townswomen’s Guild.

A very well-attended and enthusiastic meeting of the Townswomen s Guild, hoN yostord.ay afternoon, was presided over by Mrs. J. Pow, Dominion president, who explained the aims and objects of the guild and all its attendant advantages. A Kelburn branch was formed and Mrs. Hampton Brown was elected president, Mrs. Owen honorary secretary, and Miss MePbec honorary treasurer. This is the fourth branch which Mrs. Pow has formed in Wellington within the past few weeks, and everything points to a very successful future for Townswomen’s Guilds in New Zealand. Mrs. Pow introduced Mrs. Guy, a visitor from England, who gave an interesting address on the progress of Townswomen’s Guilds in other parts of the Empire. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Guy, afternoon tea concluding a very successful meeting. Progressive Games.

Scarlet-tinged oak leaves and other taumy autumn foliage decorated the drawing-room when Miss Joan Fenwick gave a very cheery party at her home at Lower Hutt in honour of Miss Betty Ellis. This was one of many delightful parties that Miss Ellis’s friends have given for her during the last week as “farewells” before she leaves for Singapore to be m.arried. “Progressive” games of a most amusing variety provided the entertainment for the evening, and a delicious savoury supper was served in the din-ing-room. Miss Jean Fenwick assisted her sister to arrange the games and generally entertain the guests. Those present were: Misses Elizabeth Russell, Helen St'aveley, June Luckie, Judy Allen, Janet Mlles. Jan Sloman, Georgette Handyside, Messrs. John and Tony Roberts, Tan Ewen, Staveley Ellis, Dick Arthur, George Phillips, Brian McEwen. B. Gibbons, Redmond Phillips, and B. Springhall.

Evening Party. On Saturday night last a most enjovable parly was held by members and friends of the Y.M.C.A. Playreaders al the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. Gardiner, Miramar. Mrs. Gardiner received the guests wearing a black velvet frock with scarlet shoulder cape. The dulies of M.C. were ably earned out. bv Mr- Ph‘l. Clarke, ami many aintising games and competitions were enjoyed by all. During supper the opportunity was taken to congratulate one of the club’s members. Mr. Frank Bishop, on his attaining his majority. Among those present were Mesdames F W. Gardiner. C. Gardiner, Misses Barbara Swan. Been O’Brien, Dorothy Longworth. Dulcie Quirke, Muriel Roy, Win. Church, Margaret Church, Dorothy Esher, Roma Burt, Elsie Cox, G. Clarke, Marjorie Small. Beatrice Nash, Margaret Forbes. Messrs. Ray O’Brien, Phil Clarke. Frank Bishop, lan Gow, Jim MacKenzie, Joe Saunders. D. F. Gwyn, M. McNaught, Colin Spratt, C. Gardiner. Reunion Party.

The ex-pupils of the Dominican Convents’ Association. Wellington branch, held a very enjoyable evening at the residence of Mrs. Halcrow, Oriental Parade, recently. Among those present were Mesdames Deidritch, Costello, Golomb, Ellis, Bragg, Norling, Misses McGrath, Beasely, Beath, Piper, O’Reilly, Michaelas. Competitions were won by Mrs. Norling and Misses Beath and O'Reilly. Supper and a happy talk brought the evening to a close. After the Races. The Farmbers’ Tearooms, Napier, were gay with autumn leaves and the warm colour of furs and tweeds on Saturday, when Mrs. W. Russell, Mrs. Jack Price, and Mrs. Linds.ay Gordon gave a cocktail part to celebrate the finish of the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. There were about 50 guests. Social Service Club. Last night’s meeting of the Wellington Girls’ College Old Girls’ Social Service Club, held in the S. P. Andrew Studio, was particularly well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. A feature of the evening was the reading of a play “A Simple Sketch,” those taking part being Miss Lilian Mitchell, Miss Rona Bitossi, Miss E. Condor, Miss Alice Mason, Miss Betty Urquhart and Miss Nell Farman. At the next meeting there will be a talK on Bagdad and the East, by Miss Dorothy Mills, and a good attendance is expected.
