The National Anthem
Sir, —In his letter to “The Times” on the subject of the National Anthem, Lord Biedisloe, doubtless with the best of intentions, has created the impression that New Zealanders habitually sing the anthem incorrectly. This is not? the case. We sing the anthem tar too much, on ail sorts of incongruous and sometimes frivolous occasions, and no doubt Lord Biedisloe has heard various people using the word "our” instead of "the.” But the .correct words are used much more often and by a greater number. Surely "the” is preferable to "our. There is more dignity and a greater degree of finality about it. The use ot -our” suggests one king among other kings, whereas we acknowledge only one temporal king when we ring "lhe King.,, We say “The Army” and "The Navy, and there is no doubt about our reference. Why, then, "Our ffing.”-!™. Wellington, May 10.
