New Zealand Cricket Team Opens Well COUNTY OUT CHEAPLY Carson and Donnelly In Fine Partnership GALLICHAN FOUR FOR 44 (Fro jr the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the Team.) (Received May 9, 6.30 p.m.) London, May 8. The New Zealand cricket team opened its tour of England impressively by dismissing Surrey, one of the strongest county sides, at the Oval, in three hours on an excellent wicket. The New Zealand bowling was steady, and supported by keen fielding. Surrey, winning the toss, batted first and was all out for 149. Gallichan took four wickets for 44, Roberts three for 31 and Cowie three for 41. New Zealand at stumps had scored 161 for five wickets. Carson compiled 60 not out, Donnelly 31 not out, and Kerr 39. Two Wickets With Successive Balls. The weather was dull and chilly. The county unexpectedly lost five of its best batsmen for 90 runs in two hours, mainly through vicious hostility to the spin bowling of Gallichan, whose figures at lunch were 15-7-19-4. He secured two wickets with successive balls. Roberts, whose steadiness was admirable, captured two wickets quickly after lunch. Cowie, in a fine spell of fast bowling, dismissed the tail, also taking two wickets with successive balls. Frequent applause from the crowd, numbering 3000, rewarded the faultless fielding of the New Zealanders. The vulnerability of - tie early touring batsmen to the express bowler Gover was relieved by the tradesmanlike display of Kerr, who batted for SO minutes, and redeemed by the courageous stand by Carson and Donnelly. The young left-handers saved the side, adding 67 in determined fashion before Donnelly Bats Well. Carson resolutely defied the attack for 100 minutes and hit eight fours. Donnelly, who played carefully, batted well and hit four fours. J. A. Dunning and IV. A. Hadlee, who are suffering from slight colds, and J. R. Lamason and G. L. Weir were omitted from the New Zealand team. Details; — SURREY. —First Innings. Knight, b. Roberts • A. Sandham, st. Tindill, b. Gallichan 31 H.-S. Squires, c. Donnelly, b. Gallichan 9 T. H.
