The opening singles of the second round Davis Cup match between New Zealand and South Africa resulted: — V G. Kirby (South Africa) defeated C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand), 7-5, A. C. Stedman (New Zealand) beat N G. Farquharson (South Africa), 7-5. 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Stedman found his driving length quicker than his South African opponent Nevertheless the games went with service until 4-4. when Farquharson. who was serving and volleying strongly, captured the New Zealander’s service at 5-4. Stedman, playing line passing shots and catching the South African with the ball at his feet, regained the lead at 6-5. and held his own service for the set. Farquharson’s brisk volleying failed in the second set against Stedman’s ground strokes and widely-angled drives. The New Zealander broke Farqnharson's service, for a lead of 2-1, after which he was never threatened. Clever Backhand Drop-Shot. Stedman, at the opening of the third set, lost touch, and Farquharson pressed the advantage. He was ahead 4-0, when Stedman recovered and kept his opponent running. He won three games but Farquharson was too far ahead and clinched the set with a clever backhand drop-shot, which he used frequently. The South African, at the start of the fourth set. led 2-0. However, Stedman made a magnificent rally and did not relax the pressure of his attacking forehand. He frequently passed the South African at the net and won six games in a row. Both Malfroy and Kirby started raggedly from the ground. Five games went against service before Kirby held his and increased his lead to 5-2. He then over-hit. At set point Malfroy took advantage of his opponent’s lapse and improved his length. Ho brought the games even, but the South African storming the net. took the set. Malfroy led 2-0 in the second set when Kirby found better form, driving hard and angling deep for the corners. He won the set without trouble, Malfroy continuing to be inconsistent. In the third.
