PLUNKET SOCIETY
Street Day To-morrow Tlie annual street day of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society will be held to-morrow, aud every citizen who contributes to the appeal will be contributing to the welfare of the future citizens of the Dominion. The society has the best right to the practical aid of the community, for its nurses care for about 80 per cent, of the babies born in Wellington. A large part of the work of the I’lu.nket nurses is the prevention of sickness by regular examinations of their little patients, and this regular attention through the eo-opera-tion of mothers would not bo possible if parents were asked to pay for the services of tlie nurses. Consequently, the society has to depend to a large extent on tlie generosity of the public, and with belter financial conditions, this year’s street appeal should realise a considerable sum. Tiie Government gives a substantial subsidy toward the work, but this is only a small part of what has to be expended during the year, and it has not been an easy matter to make accounts balance during recent years. It is hoped, however, this year’s special appeal will make up some of the leeway of the depression years.
The society is conducting a shop on Lambton Quay to-morrow, and would greatly appreciate gifts of cakes and produce. There will be a depot outside Kirkcaldie and Stains’, and another near James Smiths’. At both places cookery books will be on sale.
