AMBERLEY MEETING

Recollection Succeeds in Starky Memorial A WIN FOR FIORD Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, May 8. The Amberlev Racing Club's meeting was held to-day in tine weather before a large attendance. The track was iasst. The totaiisator handled £8095, compared with last year's total of £4203/10/-. Easy for Favourite. Jed Forest bad a decisive win in the Novice Stakes. He was one of the first to show out and led all the way. He drew away early in the run home and was never under pressure to win with something in hand from Aggravate, who gave the leaders a big break in the early stages through meeting trouble shortly after the start. Cocksure finished well to deprive Coming Star of third money in the last few strides. Short Circuit headed the remainder. Jed Forest won well, and as this was his second start only he has bright prospects in front of him. Aggravate was unlucky, as he collided with Phalanx at the start and lost a lot of valuable ground before he found his feet. Cocksure, by Cockpit from Sapient, showed further improvement, doing some good work in the run home after losing a favourable position rounding the home turn. Short Circuit, a half-sister by Paper Money to Rebel Chief, showed a marked turn of speed for five furlongs. Comus was prominent early, but faded out before the straight was reached. Top Rank Prevails. Great Star was preferred to Top Rank in the Brackenfield Highweight Handicap, but after acting as pilot for the first three furlongs he gave way to Top Rank, who led into the straight from Great Star. Streamline and Giggleswiek. Great Star did not carry on, and Streamline and Giggleewick challenged, but Top Rank was never in danger and won easily. Giggleswick finished strongly to cut Streamline out of second money on the post. Great Star was a poor fourth clear of Rose of Tralee and Grampian. Top Rank had a 71b. penally owing to carrying A. E. Ellis, who was not a qualified jumping jockey and his easy win suggested he has improved with age. •Streamline ran a solid race and would probably have held off Giggleswick but for the JaM’r causing him slight interference through boring in on him in the straight. Always Prominent. , Jovial justified her favouritism for the Teviotdale Trot by recording a comfortable victory. She was always one of the leading division, and taking charge from the pacemaker, Winning Post, at the home turn, carried on to win without pressure, while in a close finish for second money, Big Nelson got up in the deciding stride to beat Colonel Axworthy. Chieftainess was next in front of Kushanahi, Honor and Pauline Dillon. Never in Doubt. Rebel Chief outclassed his five opponents in the Glasnevin Handicap. Great Star took up his customary role of pacemaker, and led early from Rebel Chief, Capital and Wino. Great Star was a neck in front of Top Rank entering the straight, with Wino and Rebel Chief in close attendance.. Great Star was done with a furlong from home, and Rebel Chief gradually worked his way to the front. That was the end of the struggle, as Rebel Chief went on to win without being at all seriously ridden. Wino put in a telling effort nearing the post, and only just failed to overhaul Top Rank for second honours. Great Star was again a poor fourth in front of Capital, with Fair Weather, who was slow away, tailed oft*. Rebel Chief had the race in his keeping as soon as the straight was reached, and his win was one. of the easiest in his career. Top Rank, carrying a 71b. penalty, ran another sound race. Wino was on terms with Rebel Chief when the latter went to the front, but could not go with him. He had not done much work since racing at Oamaru, and this effort would do him good in view of his engagement over ten furlongs at Ashburton. Great Star showed conclusively that he has passed his best. Recollection Makes Amends. The G. B. Starky Memorial Hack Handicap provided an interesting race throughout, and a close finish. Lochain made the pace, but approaching the straight, retired, ami Rosseau took charge from Forum, witli Dropped Catch, Maroha and Recollection handy. Rousseau appeared to be hiving a comfortable win, until Recollection swooped down on him in the last 50 yards, and finishing resolutely, gained a neck verdict. Forum was a length away, a neck in front of Dropped Catch, who put in a belated run and would have been third in another stride. Dictate, who was in the rear of the field for three-quarters of the'journey, was finishing fast into fifth place, with Jolly Beggar next. Recollection ran up to the form expected of him on some of his recent previous efforts. His chance did not look very hopeful turning for home. and. although he kept his rider busy under pressure, he finished very generously. Rousseau was slow away, but made up ground through the back stretch and essayed to win from the home turn. Possibly he made his effort a little too soon. Forum ran another encouraging race, while Dropped Catch performed satisfactorily. Dictate appeared to be in trouble throughout, and even when he made a telling run in the straight to be handy to the leaders he receivqj a cheek. Lochain ran his best race to date, and would have been dangerous at a mile journey. A Close Tussle. Silver Slipper was sent out a staunch favourite for the Seadown Handicap, but her supporters soon lost interest, as, after giving trouble at. the start, she bumped into Owls Gleam when the tapes were released and whipped round, thus ruining any chance she had. Wine Card and Owls Gleam lead all the way. Wine Card had a slight advantage from her rival entering the straight, and with half a furlong to go looked likely to hold her place, but Owls Gleam wore her down nearing the post and snatched victory in the last stride. Heloise was a good third, with Potent, who was always well up, in fourth place in front of Day Dress. Owls Gleam stayed on better than previously, and worried Wine Card out of the honours. The latter put up a solid tigjht in the face of her absence from racing for some months. None of the remainder had any chance with this pair. Silver Slipper drew No. 1, but had to be sent to the outside. She defied the efforts of two assistants to get her in line, and. as at Oamaru, she placed herself in a" hopeless position as soon as the barrier went up. A Prolonged Struggle. Fiord was sent out an even money favourite for the Amberley Handicap, and carried out her part by recording a narrow but impressive win. Full Throttle was the early leader from Ponty, Golden Dart and Fiord. The last-named drew to the front three furlongs from home, and was then joined by Golden Dart, the nair lighting out an interesting struggle from that stage. They racctl abreast throughout, the run home, Fiord proving the better stayer and winning by a short neck. Silver Sight, enme from a rear position to gain third money a length

in front of Full Throttle, who beat Pouty by a head. Fiord had a well-deserved win and made amends for recent defeats. He, however, did not have much to spare from Gohlen Dart, who only gave iu in the last few strides. Good Judgment. Investors again fared well in summing up the big field for the Kowai Trot, which provided an exciting finish. The first choice. Thoruworthy, went to the front early, and led to the straight entrance, where Wee Pal and Stylish Boy appeared to head him off. This pair, however, ran out wide, and Thornworthy, hanging to the rails, was able to get on terms again a few chains from the post, and. contipuing his run. he won well by a neck from the second favourite, Stylish Lady who just headed Wee Pal on the post. Green Tanger was next, in front of Chieftaine.ss, Kushanahi, and Anna Wong. Details of the Racing By Telegraph—Press Association. NOVICE STAKES, of £BO. Six furlongs. 1 JED FOREST, 8.7 (A. E. Following his easy victory at his first appearance on a racecourse in the Greenham Plate at Newbury on April 9 Fairford was made favourite for the Derby at the call-over in London on April 13. The Two Thousand Guineas, in which Le Ksar. Goya 11, and Midday Sun were the placegetters, has been run since that date, ami it is probable that if Fairford was a starter ho has been deposed. Fairford is trained at Lambourn by H. L. (lottrill, who bought him as a yearling at the Doncaster Sales for 4000gns. and sold him to Sir Abe Bailey and Mr. W. Murray, who own him in partnership. Fairford won the Greenham Plate by six lengths and is described as a grand colt. Fairford is by Fairway from Pallet Crag. Fairway was easily the most successful sire in England last season, when his progeny won £57.931, his nearest rival being Solario, whose stock won £29.336. Fixtures. May 8, 12—Hawke’s Bay J.C.
