Active Trading Last Week ■ AN IMPROVED TONE Trading last week was much brisker, investors operating with more confidence. The turnover on all Stock Exchanges was substantial, Wellington accounting lor some 22,000 shares and £lO,OOO worth of Government stocks, the total value running to about £52,000. A feature of last week's markets was a good recovery in Broken Hill Proprietary, Electrolytic Zincs and Mount Lyells, with some activity in Broken Hill Souths at improving rates. Broken Hill Proprietary moved up from a low level, of 70/6 to dealings at S4/9, a gain or 5/3. The contributing shares advanced from 72/- to 7S/11. a gain of nearly 7/-. Electrolytic Zinc ordinaries firmed on active trading from 56/3 to 59/-. and the preference from 57/- to 60/-. Mount Lyells, influenced by the improved price of copper and the higher interim dividend advanced from 44/6 to 45./6. a gain of -J/-. Broken Hill Souths made a strong advance on sales from 46/- to 52/-. North Broken Hills were done at 76/- to 76/6. Government loans were _ firmer on a strong demand, but supplies were well held and business was not very active. A moderate turnover was done in local body debentures at steady rates. There was a good business in bank shares, but prices were barely steady. Insurance issues met a dull market, and trading was restricted. Pastoral companies’ shares were generally firm. Dalgety’s sold up to £ll/2/6, _ and Goldsbro'ugh Morts firmed to 38/6. .New Zealand industrials were sluggish, and inclined to be weak, with few exceptions. Leading Australians, on the other hand, showed some recovery from the recent setback, notably Australian Glass, ■which advanced from 88/6 to 93/6, a gain of 5/-. Colonial Sugars, whose half- ' yearly accounts are dne on May 26, were very firm, business being done at from £45/2/6 to £46. . , , Breweries were more active, but rather irregular. Swan 5/- shares sold at 32/6 and'3l/10. Carltons were done at 63/41. Dominions at 43/- and 42/6, Dunedins at 28/-, and Tooths 57/6 to 56/10. New Zealands touched 60/-, but business was done down to 59/5. Chain and other department store issues were generally firm, a feature of this section being a strong advance in G. J. Coles, which moved up from £5/4/3 to £5 10/-. Anthony Horderns firmed to 20/6. Woolworths (N.Z.) went as high as £8 1/6. and the Sydney issue advanced from £7/4/- to £7/14/-, up to £5/3/- being paid for the “rights.” Shillings. Ltd., firmed to 18/7.
