NEW WEIGHBRIDGE
Ingenious Mechanism at King’s Wharf A new weighbridge is at present being installed at King’s Wharf for the Wellington Harbour Board and when ready for use it will be the most up-to-date one of its kind in the Dominion. It will be capable of weighing all types of road vehicles, from motor lorries to heavy transport lorries with a wheelbase of 18 or 19ft. at a single weighing. The size of the platform of this new weighbridge is 20ft. x Bft. It has a maximum weighing capacity of 20 tons and is fitted with a semi-automatic dial indicator, which is of particular interest. The instrument consists of a large clearly graduated, dial carried in a glass-fronted, dust- and moisture-proof housing supported on a cabinet. The dial itself is graduated up to four tons with 141 b. subdivisions, but by the movement of a lever it can be changed automatically to read from four to eight tons, eight to 12 and 12 to 16 tons. In addition, a further weight up to four tons can be set by hand on bars at tlie front of the machinery so that it will be possible to set the tare weight of a lorry, leaving the net weight only indicated by the dial. On this weighbridge lorries will actually weigh themselves, and it is only necessary for tlie weighman to move the lever and set tlie indicator for whatever range of weight tlie lorry comes into. Consequently there will lie tlie minimum of delay at the weighbridge. The mechanism is entirely British.
