Business Acumen

In toe early days of the colony many small industries' were started by courageous people. Sometimes they did exceedingly well, but often force of circumstances altered the whole comnlexion of business. For instance, some 60 years ago, the scarcity of starch and the exceeding cheapness of potatoes lured three Wanganui men to put their all into a small starch-producing business. Twenty-five shillings a ton was the price of potatoes and they bought heavily. Just before the “starch” effort was launched the price of potatoes soared, and they decided that it would par them better to sell the potatodk, which they did, and reaped quite a harvest. The “starch” business was drooped.— M.W. (Wanganui).
