STAMP COLLECTING

By

“ KAATA”

The year—coronation year—is destined to be of the greatest possible philatelic interest. For a new collector the coronation series of King George VI stamps should form a really ideal beginning. During 1937, .in addition to the special coronation sets, there will be the definitive series of George VI stamps from all the stamp-issuing countries of the Empire, not forgetting the English stamps, and these will all' amount to nearly a thousand varieties. As usual it will be by the Dominions that the earliest issue of coronation stamps will be made. Australia, South Africa and Canada are vying with each other as to which will be first. The King is said to favour a three-quarter length vignette from a portrait and typical of his desire was the stamp issued by Canada on April 1 which was reproduced in last Wednesday’s “Dominion.” There is another detail which must be considered in the coronation and subsequent issues of the 45 Crown colonies; and that is that Far East portraits—whether of King or man—require that the Sovereign or person must wear a crown or hat. A bared head in the East signifies irreverence! There is good possibility that collectors will be able before or shortly after the Coronation to have envelopes mailed in Great Britain bearing stamps of the three British rulers who sat on the Throne in 1936. ... No advice has yet come to hand about the values of the Canadian, India, Australian, Great Britain, Irish Free State and Moroccan agencies’ sets of coronation stamps, but it is expected each set will consist of low denominations Hong-Kong is the first Crown colony to announce an issue for the new reign. Within the next two months 25,000,000 of these stamps will

be printed in London. The Falkland Islands will have a new stamp series following the coronation issue, the five ( - high values from 1/- to £1 being pictorials. Keletan in the Straits Settlements will have a new 1/- value issue. . . . South Africa will use bilingual pairs for its coronation issue, id., Id., lid., 3d. and 6d. South-West African values a 1/- stamp, bilingual pairs also being issued. Papua will have Id., 2d., 3d. and sd. values for the Coronation. Following is the list of stamps to be issued by the 45 Crown colonies >—
