FARMING TOPICS

Good Positions to be Filled Two good positions have been advertised in the New Zealand Press this week. Both are State or semi-official, and both are of interest .to primary producers. One, at £l5OO a year, is for a New Zealand representative on the Internation Wool Pubjicity and Research secretariat, London. Qualifications called for are “a sound business training and a know-ledge of the textile trade.” Possibly this position may be filled by someone from the ranks of our woolbuyers. The other position, at £515 a year, is for a crop utilisation officer. This has to do with harvesting, grading, and distribution of potatoes, onions, and barley. Applicants must have a sound knowledge of farm management .and organisation, a training in commercial activities and must hold a university degree in agriculture. Tjte successful applicant would appear to need to be something of a paragon of experience and ability. Twopence a Pig. A levy of 2d a pig on all pigs slaughtered, expected to yield £BOOO yearly, has been approved by Cabinet. This fund is to be used to provide instructional and advisory’ service to the pig industry, 'file levy is a modest one and the scheme outlined for its handling is p. sensible one. This ie a forward move. 1581 b. a Cow. New Zealand dairy-farmers have cause to feel quite superior. Professor Riddet tells us that the average American cow yields but 1581 b. butterfat a year. The Dominion's 2301 b. is about 50 per cent, better. The vast extent of the American dairy industry may be realised, however, from figures given by the professor. The 400,000 cows tested equal but 1} per cent., so the total must be 2(1,600,000 head.
