Decline in Moral Standards

Sir,—l feel thankful to you fur your leaning article in 10-duy's issue, backing up the Bishop oi Wellington's plea 'or beli, to stem the tide ot the deplorable decline in morals now known to be corrupting our national life. But when we ask what can be doue, are we to be content with an appeal to the Government? Ao do bt the Government will do all it can in the directions pointed out by your article, but every thinking person knows that that will not get to the root of the matter. The Bishop says loose win have the i .Her at heart should "go out and get the mau outside the influence of the Church." Your suggestion is iu line with this when you advocate serious sellexamiuation ou the question. 1 would go further and emphasise that as the nation consists of individuals it can only be saved from the threatened Cv. .ti aby a change in the individuals composing it. And iu this everyone can lend a hand. Let those who call theniselv. Christians renew their dedication to Christ, and theu let each tell his family and his mates that he has done so. This is simple and old-fashioned. Yet I wo- submit it is the only effective way. For years past we, as a community, have drifted along iu a half-hearted acknowledgment of Christ, and a whole-hearted struggle for material advancement, and for this reason poisonous sins are sapping the strength of our nation. It is terribly important—a matter of life and death. —I am, etc., F. C. LONG. Wellington, May 6.
