OBITUARY

Mr. Charles Headland The death has occurred of Mr. Charles Headland, Overtoun Terrace, Hataitai, Wellington, at the ago of 75. He was born in Oamaru, and at 15 years of age he was apprenticed to the sea in one of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s ships, and he served the company for many years. In ISS2 he was in the Waitara when she collided with the Hurunui in the English Channel, and at the age of 28 he was a master mariner. Early in the present century he retired from the sea and entered tho civil service in the Land and Income Tax Department, retiring from there in 1920. He was a keen yachtsman, and in 1907 he bought •the Viking from the Freyberg brothers. A prominent member of the Te Ruru Yacht Club, and what was formerly the Port Nicholson club, he was also the chief mover in the formation of the Evan’s Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Bell, Hataitai, and two sons, Cyril, Hataitai, and Stanley, Auckland, and three grandchildren. Mrs. M. A. Bowater The death occurred at Sandon on Friday, of Mrs. Mary Ann Bowater, at the age of 71. Born iu Cornwall, England, in 1565, she sailed for New Zealand at the age of nine in the Berar, and landed in Wellington on January 22, 1875. Good fortune favoured the family before sailing as they intended coming out by the CospatricT, which was burned at sea. Of the 476 passengers only six survived. Mrs. Bowater. who lived at Sandon for 60 years, was devoted to her home and was noted for her hospitality at all times. She was a keen supporter of the Methodist Church, and of the Sandon Old Boys’ Association. Immediate relatives are Miss Amy Bowater, Mesdames T. H. Williams, E. J. Bowater, J. Currie, all of Sandon, and Mr. Harold Bowater (Raetihi) ; two sisters, Mrs. J. Coulter (Sandon), Mrs. J. McNab (Marton), and Messrs. W. Bowater (Rongotea), and Alfred Bowater (Sandon). The funeral, which took place at the Sandon Cemetery on Sunday, was largely attended. The services at tlie church and graveside were conducted by the Rev. R. E. Fordyce. The pall-bearers at the church were Messrs. W. George, K. George, Geo. Bowater, Geo. Williams, Ray and Romford George, and at the graveside, Messrs. W. McNab, C. E. Eglinton, E. J. Bowater, W. George. J. Currie and A. George. Mrs. M. E. Shattky Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Shattky, a resident of Hastings for more than 45 years, died at Hastings on Saturday, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. Mrs. Shattky was born at Geelong, Victoria, in IS6I, and came to New Zealand in 1892. She settled at Hastings, where she has resided ever since. She took a keen interest in the musical activities of the town, her family all being very musical, although advancing age had compelled her retirement from active participation recently. Mrs. Shattky, whose husband died "only five months ago, was of a kindly and generous disposition, and her death will be mourned by many life-long friends. The funeral took place at the Hastings cemetery yesterday afternoon, the service being conducted by the Rev. K. Liggett. Mrs. Shattky leaves a daughter. Miss Kuby Shattky, and two sons, Messrs. Otto" and Ernest Shattky, all of Hastings.
