HORTICULTURAL CUP
High Honour for Hutt Mar
Advice was received by cablegram in Lower Hutt yesterday morning that the Royal Horticultural Society, London, had recognised Hie work of Mr. H. J. Poole as a horticulturist, by awarding him the Peter Barr Memorial Cup. This is the first time since Hie trophy was donated iu 1912 that an award lias been made outside the United Kingdom. The cup has been awarded to Mr. Poole for his cultivation of the daffodil.
Mr. Peter Barr was Hie first person to take up seriously the culture of the daffodil. He visited New Zealand in 1880. and after inspecting the then beauty spot. Mason’s Gardens, Lower Hutt, declared it to be the finest garden in the Southern Hemisphere. It was because of the enthusiasm he engendered that the first daffodil society was formed in New Zealand in 1899, Mr. Poole being one of the members. Mr. Poole also received cablegrams from Loudon front Mrs. Knox Gilmer ami others, congratulating him ou his achievement. Mr. Poole was also congratulated yesterday by many friends at the autumn show in Lower Hutt.
