How Titanic Sank (From “The Dominion,” April 20, 1912.) The Cunard liner Carpathia, with survivors of the Titanic, has arrived at New York. The. interest was intense. Never in its historv has the city been so terribly impressed. Notwithstanding the rain, enormous crowds awaited the vessel, and a crowd of 10.000 awaited at the Battery and watched her pass in impressive «i--lence. A thousand relatives and friends, many of them weeping, were admitted to the pier. The survivors’ committee issued a statement to forestall sensational exaggerations. The statement says: “The Titanic struck an iceberg at 11.40 p.m. on Sunday. The lookout reported that there was no time to avoid the iceberg. It was a clear, cold, starlight night. The boats were lowered. Three Italians were shot dead in the struggle.for the lifeboats. Orders were promptly given to put on lifebelts and to launch the lifeboats. Distress signals were sent out by wireless and rockets were fired. The vessel sank at twenty minutes past two on Monday morning. The Carpnthia received a call and reached the scene at 4 o'clock on Monday morning. Everything was ready for rescue work. It is impossible to say what occurred on board after the survivors loft. There were 2340 persons aboard the Titanic, of whom 745 were saved and 1595 were lof?t. n [Some completely erroneous vemoiiA of the disaster had been published, including statements that the vessel collided with the berg bow on and crumpled up, and another that the master and an officer committed suicide.]

The New Zealand Shipping Company has signed the purchase of the whole of the Iloulder Bros? Company’s business in Australasia, including four large steamers.
