Hawk and vermin destruction for the protection of game has cost the Auckland Acclimatisation Society £6814 over the last 15 years, according to the society’s annual report. In the last year 13,552 pairs of hawks’ feet were received, at a cost of £339, making a total of 200,396 pairs, costing £5281 during the whole period. In the last six years 29,846 stoats and weasels have been killed, and £1532 paid for tails, including £9l for 3659 tails in the last year. ’The figures show the necessity for a Dominion campaign against these pests, states the report, which adds that the society is inquiring into the possibility of establishing a market in England for stoat and weasel skins, which would give relief to the society’s funds.
