PORTRAIT FUND

Successful Meeting

The Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, recently presided over a large meeting of the executive of the Queen Mary Gift Portrait Fund, when the secretary, Miss A. Boyd, presented a statement with regard to the position of the fund, showing receipts to date as £666/14/5 and expenses, £l7/3/10. The funds in hand had been deposited with the Post Office Savings Bank. It was stated that the collection books had proved a great success, and they had now all been returned to the city treasurer. Mrs. Hislop proposed that, as her Excellency, Lady Galway, when in England, would see Queen M.ary personally, she be asked to arrange for the portrait, with Lady Cynthia Colville to help, if Lady Galway so desired. This motion was carried unanimously. The executive have been advised that Mr. John St. H. Lander, who painted the King George V portrait now hanging in the Art Gjillery, has just finished a fine portrait of Queen Mary, and it was suggested that her Excellency might view this as soon as the portrait is available.

The following is a list of subscriptions to date from the various towns, apart from the amount raised by WeL lington:—Napier and Hastings, £33 16/9,* Christchurch (Canterbury district), £27/1/3; Masterton, £l7/8/-; Wanganui, £l4/11/4; Invercargill, £l2/17/9; Levin, £l2/1/6; Feilding, £lO/2/-; Pahiatua, £9; Marton, £4/12/-; Nelson, £3/5/-; Featherston, £2/3/-; Greytown, £l/8/-; Carterton, £l/3/-; Martinborough, 9/-. In addition to these amounts, donations have also been made by various branches of the Women’s Institute, the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, and women’s clubs affiliated with the Pioneer Club. PRE-WEDDING PARTY Shortly before hep marriage to Mr. William Thorn, Miss Pat Hadfield was guest of honour at a gift evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Calder, Palmerston North. The evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing, Mrs. Corke (Longburn) and Mr. G. Cooper (Summit) winning the competitions. During the evening Miss Hadfield was called upon to open the numerous gifts received, much merriment being caused in guessing the contents of each parcel. Among those present were:—Mrs. J. P.
