PEACE LITERATURE
American Appreciation of Dominion’s Action (Received April 20, 7.20 p.m.) New York, April 19. The New Historical Society of New York, which last week protested to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. M. J. Savage, against notification that distribution of the society’s peace competition literature in the Dominion would he halted, pending payment of duty, announces that it has received a cablegram from Mr. Savage stating that he would admit the literature without delay. The society expressed its gratitude at the statesmanlike attitude of Air. Savage, which contrasted with that of Japan, where distribution had been prohibited altogether. The society has extended the closing date for New Zealand entries till June 1. The Acting New Zealand Alinister of Customs. Mr. Mark Fagan, stated on Friday that he had given the question urgent consideration. He had found that a strict interpretation of the regulations made it necessary to impose a duty on the literature of the' society, but. as he considered that the material was of purely an educational nature, he had decided to use his discretion and admit the society’s literature free of duty.
