RUGBY LEAGUE

Teams Play Practice Match Preparing for the beginning of the season next week, the St. George, Central, and the newly-formed Newtown Rugby League clubs held a practice match at Lyall Bay On Saturday. Both teams were composed of mixed players to give the younger members experience. J. Coutts captained one side, and A. O’Connor the other. Several of the players showed up promisingly, and it is evident that Newtown has the nucleus of a good team. C. Berry, a Central player and a Wellington representative forward, A. Dixon, W. Spencer, M. Moisley, L. Simons, C. Grace and L. Combs, were in good form. Coutts was outstanding. Because of the hard state of the ground a few players refused to take the field in football ohorta, and these included J. Wright and K. Mailman, both footballers of good standing. O’Connor’s knee was injured during Saturday’s practice. He was racing for a try when he was heavily tackled by Coutts, and struck the corner flag with his knee. CHRISTCHURCH RESULTS By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, April 18.
