OFFICER FAREWELLED

Mr. J. L. Tennet Joining Government Staff Congratulations to Mr. J. L. Tennet upon his appointment as quantity surveyor for New Zealand under the Government’s housing scheme were extended at a smoke concert given in his honour by the Wellington Local Bodies’ Officers’ Guild last night. Mr. Tennet, who is a qualified architect, has been attached to the engineering staff of the city corporation for the past twelve years. High tributes were paid to his ability and to bis sterling qualities. The president of the guild, Mr. F. Malcolm, presided, and among those present were the immediate past president (Mr. J. G. Mackenzie), the mayor (Mr. T. O. A. Hislop), Cr. W. Appleton, the city engineer (Mr. K. E. Luke), and Mr. C. P. Hainsworth, secretary of the New Zealand Centennial Company, Limited. Mr. Luke, in proposing the toast of the guest, said that Mr. Tennet had been associated with some important undertakings in the architectural sphere in Wellington. He had proved himself to be a most competent officer, and had richly deserved his promotion. His colleagues wished him continued success and a long and happy life. Mr. Tennet, replying, said that although he was leaving a great organisation for a greater organisation, he proposed to keep in touch with the guild, which was fulfilling an important function in the community. He returned his warmest thanks for the expressions of goodwill. Mr. M. S. D. Duckworth, who was recently appointed deputy-town clerk, was also congratulated upMn his appointment. The ceremony of handing over to the guild a photograph of the late Mr. W. H. Morton was performed by the mayor.
