RED CROSS SOCIETY

Wellington Centre Meets The decision of the tramways committee of the Wellington City Council to withdraw its concession on trams aud buses to all except those totally blind was discussed at length at the monthly meeting of the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Representations had been made to the committee for this matter to be reconsidered, as it was felt that its enforcement would bear heavily upon blind folk. Before the council’s decision authority for this concession was issued to blind folk in receipt of a pension, most of whom to all intents and purposes were totally blind. A reply to the society’s representation to the council was awaited, which it was hoped would be favourable to the request. Failing this it was proposed to set out the position in a letter to the mayor aud each member of the council. It was reported that the merger account between the War Body, the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society had been ratified by the respective bodies, and was now in operation. Satisfaction was expressed by members, and it was resolved to co-oper-ate in the advancement of the terms of the agreement in every way possible. It was decided to hold the annual general meeting of the centre on April 28, and to extend an invitation to the Hon. P. Fraser and Mrs. Fraser to be present. Appreciating the extent to which the work of the Red Cross nurse is retarded by difficulty of transport the members of the social club resolved to raise funds for the purchase of a car. Warm appreciation was expressed to Lord Nuffield for grants received through tht mayor of £2OO for the centre and £2OO for work among the blind. Feeling reference was made to the loss sustained through the death of Lady Luke, and a resolution of condolence was adopted. The chairman reported that exhibits for the international bazaar opening in London about the middle of the year in aid of the Florence Nightingale fund had been forwarded through headquarters. The proposal to hold a Red Cross appeal to the public was deferred in favour of the King George Coronation Appeal for Health Camps. A report from the Red Crose sister Cateel that classes in first aid and home nursing, both junior and senior, had begun and were beiug well attended, though junior work was being interfered with through the closing of the schools and colleges. The voluntary aid detachment had held its annual meeting and elected its office-bearers. Miss Grey, N.Z.R.N., of the Health Department, had been appointed acting-assistant commandant. A successful entertainment had been given patients at the Ewart Ward by the A.M.P. members. Arrangements were in hand for the holding of a jumble sale in aid of detachment funds. Satisfaction was expressed at the development which had been shown in the work of junior circles in the Wellington district. Many new circles had been formed. As a result of harvest festivals at the Wellington Girls’ College, Wellington East Girls’ College and Northland School large quantities of provisions had been received and supplied to families in need and institutions. The following gifts were acknowledged :— Mr. L. O. 11. Tripp, £5; Messrs. J. Newton and Sons, £3/3/-; Messrs. Richardson and McCabe, £l/1/-; Messrs. A.W.A. Ltd., £l/1/-: Mr. A. C.
