“The Dominant Sex”

Well, should a woman stand beside her husband and talk about his career or get behind and push him into one'.' Should she give up her job simply to keep house for her busband and rear children? These and other intimate problems form the theme of “The Dominant Sex,” which was privately screened this week and is to be released by British Empire Films. Phillip Holmes and Diana- Churchill play the important leads in a cast which adds strength and conviction to a thoroughly argumentative picture. That there is a touch of comedy and drama in a newly-married couple striving for self-expression, to carve careers for themselves, and to help each other along, nobody will deny. No doubt many a responsive note will strike in the hearts of all married people who see the tense and finely-acted “moments” which occur between Mr. and Mrs. Shale. Modern in all its settings and situations, and especially thought-provok-ing, the sheer humanness of the story cannot fail to appeal to an audience with a discerning taste for the more dramatic turns which human life so often takes. It is more and more argued that women should have and can claim equality with men. How much this is so—some unquestionable points of view are raised in the picture—can to a great extent be understood in “The Dominant Sex.” The story has an appeal distinctly its own, and the treatment of the fundamental facts of everybody’s married life is as superb as it is sweeping.
