“Arent Men Beasts”
When Robertson Hare gets into trouble —or is forced into trouble which is the case in his latest role as a sur-geon-dentist in “Aren’t Men Beasts?” which was screened privately this week —any audience will shake with laughter at his misguided attempts to clear himself of incriminating difficulties. From surgery into jail, bedroom to bathroom, one belated and wordy protest to another, this film carries more laughs to a scene than a dozen average comedies together.
Hare is compromised in his surgery just as he is departing for his son’s wedding. An attractive woman shrieks of an assault, and terribly bewildered he is marched off to the police station, from where he escapes, and takes refuge in his son’s flat. There he meets infinitely more trouble, which leads him deeper and deeper into delicious predicaments. Having ruined his son’s wedding day and involved him and his father-in-law in ludicrous plans to extricate him from such a serious charge, he thwarts capture and after a great deal of good luck and indelicate but humorous management on the part of his aiders and abettors, during which he runs foul of several irate people, the climax is reached when the charge against him is withdrawn. It is then revealed that the woman mistook his identity and wants to marry him instead of preventing his son from marrying. Only skilful acting could produce such infectious comedy. The east is exceptionally well balanced, as the riotous scenes will prove, and while comedy is the keynote to many a- farce an undercurrent of really delightful foolery makes the story all the more laughable. “Aren’t Men Beasts?” will be released shortly by British Empire Films.
gAMUEL GOLDWYN has purchased the screen rights to “The Pirate's Lady,” an original story by John Larkin, based on the exploits of the notorious Gulf Coast pirate, John Laritte.
