POLICE REINSTATED

Successful Sydney Appeal

Sydney, April 2. The chief Secretary, Mr. F. A. Chaffey, said that the chairman of the Police Appeals Board. Mr. Justice White, had upheld tlie appeals of Sergeant Chuck and Constable Bailey against their dismissal from tlie Police Force after tlie findings of Mr. Justice Markell. Mr. Chaffey added that Mr. Justice White had recommended their reinstatement in tlie Force ami lie had confirmed that recommendation.

Thirteen policemen in New South Wales in February iwued writs claiming £lO,OOO damages- against a nominal defendant, the Under-Secretary for Justice. It was stated that action against tlie Government was being taken by members of the force who were dismissed last December following Mr. Justice Mnrkell’s report on starting-price betting. Mr. Justice Markell, who conducted inquiries into illegal betting operations and allegations against prosecuting police in New South Wales, found that 15 people had been wrongly convicted and judged that two sergeants and eigiit constables hail framed charges .•mil arranged false evidence. He found Hint one constable had wrongly induced a person Io plead guilty, that two constables had given false evidence before the commission, and that one . ergeant had made wrongful entry upon private premises.
