FASHIONS WHIMS

In evening gowns the influence of Egypt is noticeable. Some are so moulded to the figure that the wearers find difficulty in walking. These are gathered towards the waistline at the front.

Long handles for handbags are a Schiaparelli notion both practical and smart. They look particularly well with a tailored suit, and can be hung over the arm or carried in the hand. At a recent wedding in London, the bride wore a gown of supple gold lame with a draped neckline, and a fabric knot on either shoulder. It was made with long tight sleeves and a fourpanel skirt. The train was caught at the shoulders and she wore an old lace veil.

When Marlene Dietrich embarked on the Berengaria recently she wore a belted beaver coat with a beaver cossack cap. A heavy necklet of gold spheres replaced a scarf. A sidelight of coronation fashions is the copying by American fashion houses of evening gowns designed for British peeresses to wear under their coronation robes, as well as wedding gowns to be worn by brides during the coronation season.

Coarse net evening frocks for cruise wear have baby ribbon velvet threaded around the neck and short sleeves and making bands on the skirt. Travellers returning from abroad say that leading designers are using dull-surfaced materials for evening wear, and are mixing the pastel shades in orchid effect. Some of the younger ones are daring with colour, and raspberry with pale blue accessories is frequently seen. Turquoise blue and tan is also a new colour combination.
