TIED TO POST AND SHOT
Policeman Murdered Shot dead after he had been chained by his own handcuffs to a letter-box was the fate of Richard Hammond, of the Michigan State Police, whose body was found five hours after bo hijd been kidnapped by an ex-convict. 'The murderer was Alcide “Frenchy” Benoit, who was released on parole from prison a year ago. Constable Hammond, who was 23, was patrolling in a police ear with another policeman, Samuel Sineni. Word had gone out. that two men had robbed and kidnapped a Detroit car salesman, later leaving him tied to a tree near Toledo. The two policemen halted a car containing Benoit and another ex-convict. John Smith. Deciding to take the two men to the police station, the policemen put Smith in one car with Sineni, while Hammond took charge of Benoit in another ear, and led the way. Suddenly Sineni saw Benoit puli out a revolver, press it against Hammond’s side and order him to race ahead. Sineni gave chase, firing at Benoit, who replied with counterfire. Then Sineni drove into a ditch and lost his quarry. I
